AQUATICS.

'file animal meeting of the New Zealand Yacht Squadron was held in the club's rooms, Queen-street, oil Tuesday evening last. There I was a large attendance) of members, and a keen interest was taken in the business on all sides. Commodore Murdoch presided, and fully explained several matters brought up in the report, which was of a very gratifying character, and showing the squadron to be in a most healthy condition, both numerically and financially. ) Ponsonby Regatta Club have deckled to hold a regatta again this year, some time in December. A very strong committee, lias been elected to carry out the details, and start with an excellent balance of cash in hand from last year. With the usual amount of energy which ti.e aquatic lovers of Ponsonby put into their work I have no doubt but that the regalia of 1902 will bo as Sue* cess fill as any yet held in the western suburb. Mr. George Stokes has been elected honorary secretary, and as he has the reputation of being 11 hard worker in any matter he takes in hand, the committee are to bo congratulated upon securing his services for the occasion. ; The annual meeting of St. George's Rowing Club will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall, I-'arnell, on Thursday evening next, when a large attendance is expected, as important business in connection with the club's affairs will come up for consideration. West End Rowing Club's annual report, which was presented at the meeting last week, was a very favourable one. This club still maintains _ its position as the premier club of the Waitemata as regards finance, the assets being valued at over £1000, and there are no liabilities. This is a position ot which the members should bo very proud, and Use their, utmost endeavours to maintain; and the committees of previous years, who have borne the "heat and burden" of the day in scoring such a splendid record, are deserving of the best thanlcs, not only of the members of the. club,' but of the residents of the western suburb, in having succeeded in placing West End in such an enviable position. So far no move has been made towards holding the Anniversary Regatta in 1903, and if it is intended to hold the annual aquatic I carnival it is time that a start was being made with the preliminaries. There is a good balance in hand from this year's regatta, and if an energetic working committee was formed at once there should be no trouble whatever in raising a sufficient sum to carry out the regatta successfully and give good prizes. I was pleased to see such a line feeling displayed by all present at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Yacht Squadron on Tuesday night. Every matter brought forward was keenly discussed, and in such a good spirit that very little was left unsaid on any of the proposals. This is as it should be, and I trust that the same interest in the affairs of the club will be taken in, the future. If such ,i feeling is continued by members as a whole, the welfare of the club must be greatly enhanced. Mr. I. W. Coombes has been unanimously elected to the position of lion, secretary of the Now Zealand Yacht Squadron, and his election is a very populai one with the members. Mr. Coombes is a keen lover of the sport, and since his residence in Auckland lias taKcn an active part in matters relating to both yachting and rowing, of which he possesses a thorough knowledge, and I feci sure that his addition to the officers of the squadron will prove of great service, not only to the club, but to the sport generally. Messrs. Logan Brothers have just commenced work on a small yacht (25ft overall) or a Tasmanian gentleman. They have also ti hand a fishing yacht for Moeraki, a one•ater for Otahuhu, and a mullet boat for Mr. Uouldrey, of Maraetai. An auxiliary oil.auiieh, yawl-rigged, for Ohiwa, Is also well orward in Construction. The thoroughly emphatic manner in which •lie proposal to establish a refreshment oc-ker" in the New Zealand Yacht Squadron's )lub-rooiD3 was negatived at the annual meetng, will go a long way to further the best nterests of the club with the general public, specially with the parents of the younger rachtsilien. It would have been, I + ink, a 1 'cry retrograde step fot the club to have ;aken if the proposal had been carried, and 1 linoerely hope that no such innovation vill again be attempted. One matter which is of great importance ind. which has been greatly nofleeted in former years by yachtslien generally, is the flying of the club's lag or burgee when the yachts are away iruising. Attention was drawn to the laxity n the observance of this feature at the annual neetingof the squadron, and it is to be hoped ;hat members generally will make it a matter >f duty to see that in the future there will )e no ground for complaint on this score, as veil as a general attention to tho etiquette >f flags.
