THE TE AROHA SPRINGS.
In thermal matters, New Zealand's initial difficulty arises from an embarrassment of riches. We have so many hot springs, many mineral waters, that only those who devote themselves sedulously to it will ever be able to boast of having made our thermal tour. We may therefore all the more heartily congratulate 'To Aroha upon the opinion formed of its waters by Dr. Wohlmann, as being " different from, and superior to, any other thermal drinking waters that he has examined in the colony." This blue ribbon of commendation may at any time be taken away by some one or other of Te Aroha's hundreds of potential rivals, but in the meantime it is worthy of notice and in any case assures the permanency of the place as a notable health resort. But, this is only the beginning of a health resort—to have waters of exceptional excellence. People will not flock thereto if they know nothing of it, if the means of transit are not comfortable, if every facility is not afforded and every encouragement given. We must keep every first-class liner that enters our ports and get more firstClass liners to attract outsiders. And our own population should be enabled to make more general use of such planes by reasonable railway rates. With sufficient advertising, cheap and frequent excursions during the summer months should not only profit the Railway Department and To Aroha,' but should allow thousands to take advantage of those national endowments of which many people know as yet by name only and which few can visit enough. Moreover, in the interests of suffering humanity, the Government should do mora to make known in other countries the marvellous curative properties of our thermal waters.
