POLICE COURT NEWS. Mr. T. Hutchison, S.M., presided at the Police Court on Saturday, and Sergeant Hendry appeared foi the police. Drunkenness: Four first-offenders were convicted awl discharged, and two others wore each ordered to forfeit 5s from their deposited bail money. Patrick Sullivan was lined 10?, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for his third offence within six months. Aliened Attempted Suicide: A middleaged man named Robert, Bateman was charged with attempting spicule on Friday afternoon in Queen-street. Sergeant Hendry said accused was in Queen-street and deliberately tried to throw himself under the wheels of a passing vehicle, and was prevented from doing so by the timely intervention of Constable Maher. He (Sergeant Hendry) saw the accused in the cell after arrest, when lie appeared to be perfectly sober arid' very despondent. Accused elected to be do-alt with summarily, and said he knew nothing about the occurrence. Sergeant Hendry suggested that the man be remanded till Wednesday next for medical treatment, and this was accordingly done.
