! Animal Life and the World of Nature is the title of a new monthly magazine to be published by Messrs. Hutchinson. Messrs. Bivington have in readiness a '' Short History of Rome," by W. T. Robinson, some time assistant master at Welling, ton College. It is stated that the late Lord Cheylesmore has bequeathed his splendid collection of mezzotints to the nation, and that it will be placed in the British Museum. "A History of Warwick Castle and its Owners." by "the Countess of Warwick, will be published by Messrs. Hutchinson. The work will be richly illustrated from the painting and relics in the castle. Lord Acton has arranged to publish, with Messrs. Macmillan. his father's lectures as professor at Cambridge, which were a course on "The French Revolution" and another on " General Modern History." A new edition of Lord Farrer's "The State in Relation to Trade" is about to be published by Messrs. Macmillan in their '" English Citizen Series." with an introductory chapter by Sir Robert Giffen. "The Channel Islands'' and "Stratford-on-Avon and the Sbakespere Country" are the subjects of two new volumes in the series of English Guide Books published by Mr. Grant Richards, which will bs ready very shortly. " Historical Essays and Reviews" by the JJate Mir. M'andell Creighton is now in the press. The work has been edited by Mrs. Creighton. One of the essays is on Dante, and one of the reviews deals with the Renaissance in Itaiy. From Messrs Williams and Norgate, London, comes the first part of a. book by Sir. J. liorton, entitled "My Search for Truth, and What I Found." It is a thoughtful study of natural religion, which is to be supplemented by a treatise on the Bible. In October a new quarterly, the Hibbert Journal, is to be launched by Messrs. Williams and Norgate. It will be devoted to the discussion of religious, theological, and philosophical subjects, and will be open to writers of every school of thought. Messrs. Longmans have two new novels in the press: "The Romany Stone," by J. H. Yoxall, M.P., a. story of adventure and of gipsy and Methodist life in the Peak district, at the beginning of the last century, and " The Manor Farm," by M. E. Francis (Mrs. Blundell), author of Yeoman Fleetwood." An (interesting experiment during the season (tays the Athenaeum) will be the- issuing of sixpenny editions of works of a heavier character than the books generally published in that cheap form. To judge by the sale of " Huxley's Lectures and Essays" and " Cobden's Life" the success of the new venture seems assured. For a time after the excitement caused by the publication of Fronde's famous volumes had subsided it seemed as if there was a marked declension of interest in Carlyle. Of late a change in this respect has been observable; as his writings have been going out of copyright editions have multiplied, and for these a public seems always to have been found. "The Wallace Collection" is the title of a forthcoming art- publication, containing reproductions of the famous pictures presented to the nation! and now at Hertford House. The work is edited by Mr. A. G. Temple, of the City Gallery, who will contribute a general introduction, giving an account of the formation of the collection, followed by notes on the pictures reproduced, and a. complete list of the pictures in Hertford House. The reproductions will include examples of famous British, French, Dutch, and Flemish painters, and the work will be issued in ten parts. It is one of the Goupil publications.
