STRANGE. STORY OF THEFT. Mrs? Evie Gp.ef.N"e. the pretty actress playing in "The Country Girl" at Daly's, had a new part on Saturday, July 26. She appeared in the Maidenhead Police Courtto prosecute Mi. Edmund George Duprez, a smart young gentleman, gazetted to the 4th Dragoons, for alleged theft of her jewels, worth £130. It was a. curious story. Miss Temple, who occupies "The Shanty," on the Fishery Estate. Maidenhead, said that on Thursday she left her residence at two in the afternoon to proceed to London, leaving Mr. Duprez with some friends. He asked if he might remain in the garden and read bis paper in the hammock, and this her friend Miss Lonsdale allowed him to do.
When she returned late at night from London she found some of hei jewels disturbed, and, finding that they had not been interfered with by her housekeeper, she made r 1 itirfher search, and then missed a number of jewels and some money, while money was also missing from Mrs. Lonsdale's and Miss Lonsdale's, purses. Site had a bulldog near the enlranee, and she inquired at Mr. West Reeve's residence near whether the dog had been heard to bark, as he made a noise on the approach of strangers, but no barking had beeu heard. She thereupon gave information to the police. Inspector Benning deposed to arresting Duprez at Bray. The accused, he added, produced the jewellery from his pockets, and it was that producedrings, card-case, pearl necklace, etc. Duprez, who seemed to feci ins position keenly, was remanded.
