AN EASTERLY GALE.

Early, yesterday morning the wind, which was blowing from between north-east and east, increased in force until it was blowing a, strong gale, with a heavy downpour of rain. The wind moderated somewhat during the day, but there were some heavy rain showers. Towards night the wind again increased, blowing a strong gale from th-north-east with heavy rain. Cue very si: squad broke over the city and harbour towards midnight, and continued for some time. The gale is reported from all along the coast, and the masters of vessels arriving in port yesterday all report a strong north-east gale, heavy rain and thick weather, along the coast. The little steamer Xambucca, bound from Wellington to Auckland, was oh* the Red Mercury at midnight on Wednesday, when she met with the gale, and the weather came on so thick that the master decided to heave the vessel to for tho night and wait for daylight. The barque Northern Chief, which arrived from Woliongong yesterday morning, fell in with th» gale in the gulf on Wednesday night, and anchored under Tiritiri until daylight yesterday morning. The departure of the Northern Company's steamer Waimana for VYhakatane has been postponed until this morning, in consequence of the unfavourable state of the weather.

Our Thames correspondent telegraphed last night: — A strong easterly gale has prevailed here to-day. and still "continues, but very little rain has fallen.
