H.M. .. gunboat , Sparrow arrived in • port yesterday afternoon after an unsuccessful search for the missing steamer Quirairig, now 53 days out from Newcastle/to Port Chal--mers with a cargo of 1100 tons of "coal. The warship left Wellington on August 5, and made a zig-zag ccurso along the track where it was thought there might be signs of the .missing steamer. A vigilant look-out was kept night and day, and; rockets were fired at short intervals at night from the warship in i order to attract attention. After a- fruitless search for a week, the Sparrow gave it up, and, came on to Auckland. There . are ndw no hopes, for the safety of the vessel s 'arid; her crew/ of 24-"men, and it is supposed that; she met with bad weather and foundered with all on ;board.* ; "..-
