THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN COnitESFOXDENT.] Thames, Thursday. At tho meeting of the Borough Council this evening, the Mayor (Mr. Trembafch) presiding, letters were received from Messrs. J. H. Witheford and W. J. Napier, M.ii.R.'s, expressing their sympathy in the Council's efforts to get the Piako Block made available for settlement, and stating they would support any practicable scheme which might be devised to accomplish the desired object. Mr. Witheford also added that lie was making a special effort this session to get some,th.ing practical dune in the direction of ensuring the more speedy settlement of Crown lands in the northern part of the colony. Miss E. Irvine, of Ponsonby Road, Auckland, wrote protesting against the valuation of £15 placed upon a vacant allotment in Pollen-street owned by hor, and it was decided to reduce the amount to £10.

A letter received from, the Mines Department, Wellington, staled that a grant of £50 bad been authorised towards the cost of repairing Rocky Point Road. A circular received from the. Preliminary Committee ro the establishment of a home foi veterans was laid on the table.

The foreman of works reported that yesterday was a record day fot rats, he having purchased and burnt no less than 150. 11l response to the Council's invitation for competitive designs for a suitable band rotunda, which it is proposed to erect in the Victoria reserve in commemoration of the King's coronation, three plans were received, one each from Messrs. W. J. Smith, Percy Brown and Henry Simmoncls, all being local residents. After some discussion it was resolved to refer the designs to a meeting of the General Purposes Committee to be held on Thursday afternoon next for the purpose of going into their merits and cost. 4 *^
