CORONATION DAY.

STATEMENT BY SIR J. WARD.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY ON AUGUST 9. [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] ' • Wellington, Thursday. In tlM> House of Representatives to-day, Sir J. Ward announced that the Governor had received official intimation that : the Coronation would take place on August 9, arid he proposed to adjourn Parliament from the previous Thursday night till the afternoon of the following Tuesday. It was intended to have one public holiday throughout the colony, namely, Saturday, August 9. A request had been made to have the holiday on Monday instead of Saturday. The Government had fully considered the request, and had come to the conclusion that it was not desirable to change the date. The whole of the. demonstrations throughout the world would take place on the Saturday.

The Mayor (Mr. A. Kidd) received a telegram from the Acting-Premier last night on the same lines as the statement made in Parliament, and adding that the various Government ceremonies originally intended to have been held on June 26 will therefore tike place on Saturday, August 9. The Coronation 'Committee of the Auckland City Council will meet during the forenoon to discuss the question as to the date to be fixed for the local celebrations and as to the arrangements for the programme. The various telegrams received by the Mayor from other parts indicate that there is a desire that the festivities should be fixed for Monday, August 11. .

CORONATION BALL IN WELLINGTON. [iU* TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.]. Wellington, Thursday. The Governor has now fixed August 6 for the Coronation ball. An open reception of the citizens of Wellington is to be held on the 9th, and a party will be given to the sailors in port at a later date. His Excellency visits Napier on Monday, Palmerston on Tuesday, and New Plymouth on Wednesday, and leaves for Auckland on Friday. - . ; ','
