Thomas W, Croke, D.D„ Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cashel, wan! born in Ireland in 1824. »Ho wont to Paria. •when a lad, and entered the Irish College*, read there the usual course of philoso-s pry and theology, and left in the year 1844., After spending a year in the College of" Men in, in .Belgium, he went in November. 1845,to the Irish College in Rome, where he re-' mained nearly three years attending lecturer iii the celebrated Roman University, ami' reading theology ander the Jesuit Fathers' Perrono and Passaglia. In 1846 he won th«; Cold and silver medals, and in the following;! year took his decree as Doctor of Divinity,, and was ordained priest, afterwards return-, nig to Ireland. In 1865 he was appointed; parish priest of Doneraile and Chancellor ot the diocese of Cloj'ne. Five years later her accepted the Bishopric of Auckland, New Zealand, where he remained until 1874. Irr 1375 he was promoted-to the ArchiepisoopoJi See' of Cashel. Of late years Dr. Groke'fl. name has been conspicuous by its connection with the Land League and Irish Nation*' alist movements.
