BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Auckland Education Board met yesterday morning. In the absence of the chairman (Mr. L. J. Bagnall) Mr. J. Muir presided. The other members present were: Messrs'. W. Lambe, R. Hobbs, J. G. Rutherford, S. Luke, P. Mackay, J. Blade?, and J. D. McKer.zie.
Chairman's Report: The chairman's report stated that ihe following tenders had been accepted:—Erection of school at Mackaytown, G. H. James, £359; erection of school at Te Puna Point, J. B. Chappell, £138; erection of school at Te Matai (Te Puke), £140; roofing Waitangi school, Waiuku, J. H. Blackwood, £23 10s; roofing Wharehine school, Witheford and Rotherham, £33. The headmaster of Richmond Road school had been informed that the Board had no substitutes available for teachers absent through influenza; that Mr. Wheeler, Commissioner, Tamahere, had been informed that the Board ' would indemnify him against any possible liability under the Workers' Compensation Act, during his term of office; that £5 had been granted to Taupari for a library; that a letter from the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, relative to children at Mercury Bay not receiving instruction, had been forwarded to the truant officer fey investigation. The following resignations had been received: — Miss W. Scott, assistant-teacher, Waihi District High School; Miss A. M. Hinton, pupilteacher, Newton West School. The following temporary appointments had been made : —Miss M. E. Driver, to Kauaeranga, Sandesstreet school, in absence of mistress; Miss R. V. Collins, Nelson-street; Miss E. P. Duffua, Newton West; Miss M. E. Davison, Napier-street. The report was adopted.
Finance Committee: The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts, amounting to £109 15s 3d, on tho Board fund account, £230 13s 7d on the building fund account, and £6 5s 7d on ■; tho Auckland Technical School account. The committee recommended payment of salaries as follows to ;teachers during absence on account of illness: E. M. Jennings (Otorohanga), three months one month's salary; Miss A. E. Bond (pupil-teacher, Paeroa), six months, half salary during that period. The committee submitted for the Board's consideration a recommendation from the chief inspector to discontinue the classes for the instruction of pupil-teachers in Latin and French. This matter was deferred for a report from the inspectors-in-oouncil.
Selection of Teachers: The report of tho Teachers' Selection Committee was adopted as follows:—(1) That.the following appointments be authorised:-—Miss Annie C. Johnston, to be teacher of Brooklynn " aided" school; Mr. S. Walker, to be second-assistant master of Beresford-streefc school; Mr. W. Birss, to be third assistant-master of Ponsonby school; Miss M. K. Edenborough, to be mistress of Epsom school; Miss O. E. Dunstan, to be mistress of Waitckauri school; Miss M. Baden, to be mistress of Kihikihi school; Miss A. Carter, to be mistress of Opitonui school: Miss M. E. Carson, to be mistress of Owharoa school. (2) Your committee, have examined the nine applications for'the position of mistress of the Tararu school, and recommend that the names and qualifications of the following candidates be submitted to the committee for consideration: Misses O. Murriah, R. L. Gavey, M. C. Kelly. (3) Your committee have consulted .school committees in regard to proposed appointments as follows :—Pongakawa, Miss G. E. Barlow; Tvaramu and Ngahinepouri, Mr. F. C. Attwood. (1) Your committee recommend that the names and qualifications of the following teachers be submitted to the committee for the, selection of a third lady-assistant at the Newton West school:—Misses A. D. Bright, M. C. Tregear, E. E. Harris, and F. A. Willis. (5) Your committee recommend that the request of the Ngahinepouri Committee for a full time school (with an average attendance of nine scholars) be declined for the present. (6) Your committee recommend that applications for the position of mistress of the Botorua school be invited by advertisement from teachers qualified to take charge of infant clashes. (7) Your committee recommend that a teacher be sent as soon as possible to reopen tho Broadwood "aided" school. (8) Your committee defer their recommendation for tho selection of teachers for the following schools:—Opua, Totara (mistress), Waikiekie (mistress).
The Capitation Grant; A circular was received from the North Canterbury Board conveying a resolution of that Board to the effect that Parliament be requested to ask the Government to increase the capitation grant from £4 to not less than £4 2s 6d. No action was taken.
Half-time Schools: A letter was received from the New Zealand Educational Institute suggesting a quarterly holiday on Saturday, to teachers of half-time schools, in order to allow them to attend the meetings of the institute. The matter was referred to the committaefi concerned.
Exemption Certificates: The Auckland Scripture Gift Association applied for certificates of exemption, under section 5 of the School Attendance Act, 1901, for five private schools, situated respectively at Mon-tague-street, Newton; Primitive Methodist Churches. Great North Road and Now North Road, Newton Road; • and St. Sepulchre's old schoolroom, Symonds-street. The applications were granted. A similar application, made bv the Very Row Dr. Egan, in respect of the Roman Catholic schools of the Auckland province, was referred to the inspectors. ■ ■
School 1 Buildings: Applications for new schools at Gumtown, Mangawai, and Purerua wore deferred for future consideration. An estimate was furnished of the cost of ah addition to the infants' school building at Mount Eden, and the matter was referred to the inspector to report on. Plans for additions at Newton West and Richmond Road were approved, and it was resolved to call for tontlars at once.
District Riffh Schools: The Aratapu Committee wrote complaining of tho inadequate provision made for the maintenance of the District High, School recently opened there. It was resolved to reply that the power of the Board was limited by tho regulations, and that all that was possible for the present had been done. It was decided to recommend the establishment of a District High School nt Tauranga. Religious Instruction in Schools: The Paeroa Committee wrote declining to accede to the request of the Rev. J. Belton for the use of the school for tho purpose of giving scriptural instruction outride of the school hours. It was decided to inform Mr. Belton that the Board regretted it had no power to interfere with the committee's decision.
