SEW ZEALAND FROZEN BEEF.

Affetzi of £5 5s was, it will be. remembered, | offered at the last Auckland Agricultural Show by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Shipping Coanwuy, through their agents, Messrs. up. D. Nathan and Co., for the best pen of cattle suitable for freezing and shipping to the London market. The decision given by the London judges has just been received, stating that Mr. R. Reynolds, of Cambridge, lis been awarded the prize. The following report on the awards by Messrs. Weddel and Co., forwarded by Mr. Bevins, manager of the Auckland Freezing Company, to the secretary of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, will doubtless prove of great interest to our agricultural readers:—" We today had this show beef on the ma:ket, where i it was exhibited to the very best advantage, and labelled with cards getting forth the special nature- of the consignment. The beef was inspected by a. large number of butchers, who were impressed by the general excellence of the, quality of the shipment. We were assisted in judging the various marks by three of the most competent men at Smi'hfield, and we append the following awards, the lots being reported upon ill order of merit, viz.: — K 11 (four fores, 2111b average; four hinds, 2121b average), R. Reynolds: A very choice lot of beef, well-bred and well-covered throughout; full of well marled lean meat, of excellent colour, with good brisket, loin and rump. Altogether, it was an ideal sample of the class of beef suitable for the best London trade, and the first place was accordingly awarded to this lot. K 11 (four fores, 2111 average; four hinds, 2161b average), .J. Fisher: Stout, shapely, well-bred beef, which was spoiled by being too fat for the English market at ordinary times, though it would make tip-top Christmas beef The lot was very pleasing to the eye, and it was given second place for its genera) appearance rather than for actual merit. JII (four fores, 1931b average; fom hinds. 2991b average), Reynolds: A good, useful parcel of lean butcher's meat, but a little lanky, and not so attractivelooking as the ' K 11,' though intrinsically equally good. The general opinion was that this lot merited third place, and seme of us considered it almost equal to the ' K 11' lot, being more useful, but; not so ' showy.' it Win a good third. L 11 (four lores, 22?.1b average: four hinds, 2121b average), E. Allen: Good, sound beef: but one animal, being rathei legcrv and nlain, spoilt the other . four quarters, which were particularly choice. This mark was awarded fourth place, i 11 . (four fores, 1781b average; four hinds, 1811b average), Reynolds: Rather plain and unfinished quarters, which looked quite ordinary beside the other choice quality beet. One hind was badly i.rnised in trie leg and loin, and another hind had been similarly damaged in (he loin, which somewhat detracted from the general appearance of the parcel. This lot we place fifth. O 11 (four fores, 13Slb average ; four hinds. 1971b avcraga), J'.. Allen : Only middling quality beef. Four quarters looked fiery, suggesting that one oi the animal- had been over-driven. The othei four quarters were rather plain, and 'wanting in 'topping ii)), - and the parcel only took sixth place. Central: Altogether, the quality of this beet was very creditable to the growers, and it is evident that yon have some very choice cattle in your district. Such quality is this consignment comprised would always sell to advantage in the London market. The butchering, dressing, and general get-up of the parcel was satisfactory, and the beef opened out in nice, bright condition. As soon as the judging bad been completed, further cards stating the positions awarded to the various lots were placed on the best, and in every «rnv the utmost possible advertisement wa? obtained from this special shinWent, The judges were: Mi. Thomas Borfbwiek (Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons). Mr. Harrv Ravvson (Messrs. Brewster and Frost), Mr. Ilenrv Cats (Messrs. Cense and Franks), Messrs. W. Weddel and Co.--(Signed) W. Wkddei. and Co."
