AN EASTERLY GALE.
The wind, which has been blowing from between north and north-east for the past few days, increased yesterday, and at night was blowing a strong gale from the north-east, with a heavy sea rolling into the harbour, and accompanied by heavy rain. All along the coast Dad weather is reported, a gale from the eastward with a very heavy sea prevailing. The Northern Company's steamer Clansman, which was to have left Russell for Auckland last evening, had to postpone her departure, the wind and sea being too heavy for her to get outside. The steamers Ohinemuri for Whangarci, and Chelmsford for Whangapoua, which were to have left last night, are delayed in port owing to the gale. Several sailing vessels, including the barque Northern Chief and barquentine La Bella, for Kaipara, and the schooner Vaite, for the Islands, and a number of the coasting fleet, are also prevented from sailing for their destinations.
