The Guardian, which is the organ of thC ; moderate High Church party,' and is dis- : tinctly opposed to the extreme ritualists,', thus refers to Dr. Gore's appointment:—- " "Lord Salisbury has done -well in appoint-, ing Canon Gore to the bishopric of Worcester; The selection will not commend itself' to those who hold that certain dioceses; ought: to bo labelled as Evangelical, and others as High Church, spheres of influence, and there \ will be some who cannot forgive Canon Gore.; his connection with Lux ; : Mundi, ■-: or ■: his'. Christian Socialism, or his membership (up-v to the present time) of the E.C.U. The great mass of earnest churchmen; however, t will . recognise that ,by his . promotion :, the j Episcopal Bench gains: as a .. recruit - :- the man who, when .the ecclesiastical history of the present generation ' comes ■ .to be written, will be ' found to % have*; influenced the Church of England quite. as 'deeply as any man now-? living. His influence has been felt alike by, clergy ' and by laity, and not in one direction only,-.,; but in many : as a theologian he lias strength--cned the faith of thousands by his expositions of doctrine, and by bis plea for the Acceptance of sober and reverent Biblical criticism; as a Christian moralist he lias stirred men to recognise a higher standard of social and - person duty; and as an ecclesiastical • statesman he has.helped- to bring the press-:.: ing need of. For the -last two :: or three years he has been ! in residence in : August, and has preached at the evening services, and the crowds that hove attended, even in the : absence of . any regular choir, have testified in a remarkable mannci to the attraction which' Canon Gore possesses as a deeply spiritual, thoughtful,; and practical preacher. He is greatly respected by.'; Nonconformists,' and earlier in the year addressed a meeting of: Wcsleyair ministers at.
