FIRE IN STANLEY-STREET.

COTTAGE AND WORKSHOP DESTROYED. Soon after the city clocks chimed eight; o'clock last night, a fire broke out in; a/ -roomed cottage owned by Mr. : Sargeant, and tenanted by Mr. ; Oswell Chain*!; ;bers, in . Stanley-street, and in close proximity toVAlten- Road. In . a few seconds Haines had sprung up the walls and were shooting out oi the roof . and front of ■ the building, while th? interior: of the house,; and other structures surrounding ■-". it V were ; : filled with dense black smoke. The cot* tage," apparently, being composed of very y old material, looked as> ix.;it fed the flames, and though but a few minutes elapsed before the arrival of the Parnell Fire Brigade, . under Superintendent Cowen, and the: : Auckland Fire Brigade, under the control of Superintendent Woolley,' it seemed thai ; the • whole of the interior must be destroyed; before a stream of water could be directedV upon the fire.' Pending their arrival, several police under Sub-inspector < Mitchell V and Sergeant Forbes, and ! including Con- - stable Hutchison, did excellent service ii* saving a number of articles and tools, etc.,,,: from an adjoining;: workshop of Mr. Sargeant, which building subsequently caught , alight. In ; this they were r assisted , in; no small degree by several member., 'of the Salvage Corps, under 'Captain Field,, who plunged into the ' latter building' ■: amid'; dense smoke, and were : instrumental in ; pulling out of the fire collection of valuable tools. vOn the advent oi the brigade five or ten minutes'« work with the various reels of; hose, and a fairly good pressure ot water, sufficed to extinguish: the flames*;! but not before the house had: been' com- f pletely destroyed, while the shed used as v a workshop was practically in rums. Several other dwellings situated on sithev ' side! of the ; cottage destroyed .were scorched, The occupant of the house (Mi Chambers) left home on a boating excursion earlj in th*!morning, and everything thefi within the building wa? apparently aS right. Mr. Chambers only returned home when the fire-was in progress. It is under; stood that there was no insurance on th* house Oj. on . the shed, but the furniture in the house was : covered with', a £$ policy in the New Zealand Insurant Office. . / The sight of the blaze, which was/a brilliant one before the arrival oi- pX brigade, attracted an immense crowd lof onlookers. ■ ' . _ __ .. j... • •
