The Englishmen have commenced a match against 16 country players on the Melbourne ground. The Englishmen in their first innings have lost six wickets for 377, the principal scorers being: Hay ward 57, Jones 47, Jessop 46, McGahey 49, and Quaife 91. INTERSTATE CRICKET. RECORD SCORING. (Received January 25, 8.13 p.m.) Sydney, January 25. Interest has been added to the interstate cricket match through the inclusion in both teams of a number of colts to fill the places of the veterans engaged in the test match at Adelaide, who have not been able to get back in time. The New South Wales team in their first innings made 327—0. Gregory 60, Hopkins 117, Farquhar 35, Poidevin 82, Pite 13, Kermode 7. Mears, Carter, Clarke, Mcßeath, and Cotter made "ducks." Extras, 13. (Received January 26, 5.6 u.m.) In the interstate match Saunders took six wickets for 57, Laver, two for 88, Wanie two for 88, Collins nil for 62, Worrall nil for 19. The Victorians in their first innings have no wickets down for —Worrall (not out) 2, McMichael (not out) 11. The partnership of Hopkins and Gregory was the most brilliant batting on record in intercolonial matches. , The rapidity of the scoring was a record for these matches. Hopkins reached his century, in 99 minutes and made 23. oarers". The third century was registered for tnree hours and ten minutes' play. After Poidevin's dismissal five wickets fell for " ducks."
