DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Dovonport Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last • night, the Mayor (Mr. Malcolm Niccol) presiding, and there were also present: Messrs. E. W. Alison, H. J. Baulf, J. A. Walker, J. W. Harrison, and R. Logan, jun. Legal Proceedings: It was resolved to institute proceedings against a resident of the borough for erecting a building without the necessary permit to do so. A similar course was also adopted in the caso of a person removing a quantity of water from the 1 Devonport tennis grounds without permission. Petition: The Council received a petition from a number of residents of Burgess-street,' applying for a reconstruction of a portion of that particular street. Tho matter was referred to tho Streets and Works Committee. . ■ Insanitary Buildings: The sanitary inspector and the health officer (Dr. Makgill) notified the Council that there were several buildings and back yards, etc., in the precincts of the borough that were in a insanitary condition. It was decided to instruct thoso persons responsible to improve the present, unsatisfactory state of their buildings, etc. Regulation of Council Business: A resolution was moved by Mr. Walker to the effect that the Streets and Works Committee be instructed to draw up some plan as to the best manner in which the whole business and working of the Council would be properly systematise! and otherwise regulated. Tho mover pointed out that the business of tho borougjj was increasing tremendously every day, and in order that all matters in connection with the Council should receive prompt and careful consideration, h.i thought his scheme would bo a most judicious and advisable one. The resolution was unanimously agreed upon, the Streets and Works Committee being instructed to forward a report anent the proposal at tho next meeting of the Council. Building Inspector: Mr. C. Lansdown was appointed building inspector for the borough. Overcrowding 'Buses: Tho town clerk was instructed to inform the police to keep a strict surveillance over the drivers of the late 'buses 'in _ order to prevent the overi crowding that is now being complained of. 1 Proposed Western Park: The Streets and I Works Committee recommended, and it was agreed upon, "That tho matter bo left in the hands of tho Mayor and Mr. Alison, to ascertain terms on which a portion of Shoal Bay, say, from Lytton and Summer Streets, could bo secured from tho Harbour Board." Finance: The town clerk reported that the bank balances stood as -.—General, debit, £1828 14s; waterworks, credit, £856 Os 9d; interest account No. 1, credit, £845 12s lOd; interest account No. 2, credit', £405 Is 3d; interest account No. 3, credit, £199 4s Id; deposits account, credit, £12; Rangitoto Island Domain Board, credit, 15s lOd ; Devonport Domain Board, No. 1, debit, £128 12s 9d; Dovonport Domain Board, No. 2. debit, £14 15s 6d. Accounts: The following accounts were presented for payment:—General account, £153 3s 9d ; waterworks account, £129 7s 2d ; Devonport Domain Board land account, £14 6s sd. '
