One end of the wicket was still perfect, but at the other end there was an extensive oblong patch, worn through on the pitch, rather short of a good length. The attendance was' 5000. Hayward and Tyldesley faced Trumble and Howell. Tyldesley hit Trumble to the square-leg boundary. Two balls later he gave Hill, at short-leg, a sharp righthanded chance, which was not held. In Trumble's next over he beat Hay ward with a beautiful ball. Hayward was batting an hour and fifty-four minutes, his display being faultless except for a difficult chance o stumping late last night—two wickets for 113. ' : ' , Tyldesley and Quaife added 13 slowly, the former being then run out through overeagerness to run for a hard cut, which Trumper returned smartly. , .
