WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[by TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. HON. J. CARROLL. The Hon. J. Carroll, who returned to-night from the East Coast, states definitely that he will not visit England for the coronation. It is probable that he will go Home later, in the year. ' / SALMON OVA. V Advice has been received by the' Minister for Marine that salmon ova from Great Britain—so,ooo, presented by the Duke of Richmond, and 150,000 obtained from' the Tay Fishery —have - been placed on board the Gothic, which left Loudon yesterday. The shipment is claimed to be one of the best, that could possibly be procured. The ova will be sent to the 1 Government hatchery at Hakataramea. , • v; FLAX.,' ' Inquiries made 'by the Agricultural Department show that the Harbour -Boards in Auckland, Lyttelton, and Otago, are unable to furnish the accommodation required for flax, which is to be graded. . Storage at those ports will consequently have to be obtained from private firms. As soon as arrangements for accommodation have been made the Agricultural Department will frame regulations for the compulsory grading of all flax intended for export-. ELECTRIC TRAMWAYS. The salary which is to be paid to Mr. S. Richardson, late manager of the New Zealand Electrical Syndicate, as assistant .to Mr. Wright, the city- electrical trmaway engineer, will be, £450 per annum. The engagement is to be terminable by one month's notice on either side. The Mayor informed the City Council last night that it was necessary that Mr. ; Wright should have someone under him who understood the work to be done, and who could attend to the details. Mr. Richardson had been about to leave the city, and the Tramway Committee, after consultation with Mr. Wright, decided that it was advisable to secure his services. Mr. Devine asked whether there would be anything for Mr. Richardson to do for a, year. The Mayor explained that the committee had been assured by Mr. Wright that there would be an abundance of work for Mr. Richardson as soon as the site for the power station had been selected. It was possible that Mr. Wright would be able next week to submit his report as to routes, etc. The Council intended to erect the powerstation itself. The money required in the near future would be taken from the general account, and afterwards returned to it from the loan. ■ ~■•/. ■ ; - BRASS BAND ASSOCIATION. The- Minister for Railways was waited upon this morning by a deputation from the North Island Brass Band Association, with a request for the free railway conveyance of bandsmen attending the annual contest, Jie held in New Plymouth in March., Sir J. G. Ward said that the difficulty was that the Minister for Railways was asked to make the concessions all over the colony, and on all sorts .of occasions. Bauds were already carried .at a very low rate, but, it would be a pretty big thing to carry about. 400 bandsmen free. He would be inclined to support a contribution from the colony in aid of the contest, but he would not like to commit himself to carry the bands free. He would, however, bring the matter before the Cabinet, if their request, with the reasons in favour of it, .were put before him in writing. "The moment you get hold of a State railway," said the Minister for Railways, there are thousands of people that think they ought to be carried free. They have no more right to be curried free than any one else and you have to resist them. I j i am refusing them every day." j
