BAKERS' DISPUTE.

The Arbitration Court continued its sittings yesterday at '[ the Supreme Court, and concluded ( the hearing of the dispute in the baking trade. Several witnesses were called ' on behalf of the masters, and both sides addressed the .Court, on tho whole case. His Honor Mr. Justice Cooper intimated that the Court would endeavour to announce its award :on Friday. CERTIFICATED ENGINE-DRIVERS' ;;" , ;:;."■.,■..';.- WAGES. .'■;, " Particulars of a dispute between the Auckland Certificated Engine-drivers' Union and 92 employers, cited from as far north as Opua, Bay of Islands, to as far south as Mamaku, Rotorua, were filed yesterday with Mr. R. Goring Thomas, Clerk> of Awards. The dispute has been referred to the Conciliation Board by the union, but it is not unlikely that an application will be filed asking the matter to be referred direct 'to the Court of Arbitration. Messrs.; Arthur Itosser and H. Evans are to represent the union. The schedule of wages, hours, etc., asked for by tho union are as follows;-— ".i \Clause I—Hours: 47 hours shall constitute a week's work, as far as practicable made up las follows:— hours on five days of the t week and 4£ hours on Saturday; but daily | division of hours may be mutually arranged in each establishment. Clause Stationary Engines: The minimum rate of wages to be paid per week shall be as follows:—To holders of first-class certificates, £3; second-class certificates, £2 10s. No driver shall be expected to do any work outside his own legitimate trade during the hours the engines and machinery are running; nor even where a fireman is employed shall the driver bo required to do any work which may interfere with his giving proper attention to his engine and boiler, such as fitting or repairing any mill machinery, etc., which cannot be done in or alongside the engineroom. ■No driver shall be required to oil : any -. mill shafting or .running gear outside of the engineroom while the engine is running, -and if oiling requires to be done before starting time, or during the dinner hour, the time occupied in so doing shall be paid for at the rate of ordinary time. "When steam has to be raised by the driver, one hour shall be allowed at ordinary rates. -.;• ~ - .. Clause 3—Locomotive and Traction Engine Drivers: Minimum weekly wage, £3 6s. Payment at a rate per trip shall not be recognised, neither shall there be paid a rate per 1000 ft in hauling timber whereby less than the union rate of wages is likely to be paid. One shilling .per day extra shall bo paid to any. driver acting as a foreman, or in any capacity where he is held responsible for any other men's work being efficiently performed. ■"Tiere trips cannot be arranged to suit the 8£ hour day, 47 hours shall count as the week's work, and all over that shall be charged as overtime. .• '- - Clause 4—River Certificates: Holders of river certificates shall be paid a minimum wage of ,-£3 per week, except when plying outside harbour limits, when the rate shall be £3 per week and found. Where the 8i hour day is likely to disarrange the running of a vessel, then 47 hours shall constitute the week's work, time to count while the engine-driver is required to bo on duty, whether runninc the engines or alongside the wharf; all*over 47 hours in any week to be counted as overtime." , Clause s—-When more than one shift is employed, there shall bo an exchange of shifts each week. Clause 6—All wages shall be paid in full. Clause Overtime All time worked beyond the time mentioned in the previous clause shall be paid for at the rate of time and aquarter for.the first two hours, and thereafter time anl a-half. Double time on Sundays. Clause Tfolidavs: The following holidays phalli bo ™iven without stoppage of iw» (or if required to work shall be paid for at, the rate of time and a-half), viz.. New Year's Day, Januarv 2, Anniversary Day, Easter Monday, King's "Birthday, and Boxing Day. Christmas Dav and Good Friday shall also .bo given without stoppage of pay. but if required to work on those days double time shall be paid. Clause 9—Preference: Employers shall employ- members of the union in preference to non-members provided there are members of the union qualified to perform the work, and ready and willing to undertake it.
