SPEECH BY CHAMBERLAIN.
WAR PREFERABLE TO SURRENDER. WARNING TO TRADE UNIONS. OLD AGE PENSIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright.' (Keceived January 8, 12.30 a.m.) , London, January 7. J Mr. Chamberlain, '■■■ speaking ' at ; Birmingham, said war was preferable, to a mean surrender of Britain's heritage, involving England's losing the confidence of i kindred nations, whose future rivals were also hers. There .was hardly a man in Australia or Canada and the rest of the colonies who had not expressed scorn and contempt for the politicians who systematically spoke and* worked against" their own country. He warned trade. unions that an attempt Ito restrict the .'/output would' damage workmen and employers. It was ' impossible to deal.;. with • the question of old age pensions until the friendly benefit societies, trade unions and co-operative associations could unite in adopting a practicable scheme clearly distinguishing poverty as the result; of misfortune and ill-health from poverty due to misconduct and improvidence. ,
