CRICKET.

NORTHERN WAIROA V. WHANG AREI. The cricketers who went to Whangarei for a series of matches , during the Christmas holidays report a good time and a hearty reception in all quarters.; The trip was arranged by Captain Pearce, who, for the sum of £1 per man, took the team to Whangarei and back. The route was from Kopuru to the Wairua Falls, or nearly so, by steamer, thence by coach to Whangarei. The team left the Wairoa on- Tuesday and arrived at Whangarei the evening of the same day. They took up their quarters in the township, and were provided with a coach to travel to their matches. The play for the first three days was at Karoo, on matting laid on an asphalt pitch. The fourth match was played, as an extra, at tho special request of the Maungakaramea players, who agreed to provide horses to convey the Wairoa team to Tangiteroria if they would stop and play at Maungakaramea on the Saturday. Most of the matches were delayed or interfered with by rain, but the travellers were fortunate in getting a good deal of play into each day of tho tour. -- The three games at ICamo were against very much the same players,' with a few changes each day. The team on the third day was the strongest. The general result of the tour is an unbeaten record. The first game was won by 10 wickets, the second a doubtful draw, rather against Wairoa, the third was a draw in favour of our boys, and the Maungakaramea game was won by 28 runs. The total runs made by Wairoa amounted to 351 for 35 wickets. Their opponents made 328 runs for 48 wickets. The local team was by no means a representative one, and were fortunate in getting home unbeaten. Elliott rode over on Thursday night, and was able to render good service in Friday's match, though lie was travelling the greater part or the previous night. The mainstay of the Wairoa team was undoubtedly Stephens, whose bowling was a surprise to Whangarei players and spectators alike. His bowling analysis for the tour was 30 wickets for 126 runs, and his, batting average was 18 runs. Smith played his. game consistently 'ill through, and topped the batting averages with 19.- His play earned him a place amongst Wairoa representatives, even though it is ' slow. Fanthorpe , was also onei ; of the pillars of the tour, his batting average was the highest until the Maungakaramea match. His fielding was first-class. Alans ill fielded well and batted steadily, keeping up his wicket against some very fine bowling. Although his average was not high his services were invaluable to the success of the team. The' highest score made throughout the matches was by M. Whitclaw, who made 45 after he had been badly missed by Smith. Appended are the scores: — Played on December 25, at Karno.
