EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

[by TELEGRAPH. —PRESS association.] New Plymouth. Monday. The Educational Institute concluded its meetings to-day. At' the morning session a remit from North Canterbury, that the Minister be requested to extend to schools taking a suitable course in extra subjects for Standard VII. the '.privileges at present granted District High Schools, was amended as follows:—" That the Inspector-General's " scheme; of scholarships be endorsed by the Council." The amendment was carried. A Westland remit that High Schools be not open to children who have not passed Standard VI., or an equivalent, evoked a good deal of discussion. ; The motion was lost. A resolution was carried that in the opinion of tho Council a revision of the syllabus is necessary, and that in framing such revision the several classes of schools be provided for, and reductions made in the syllabus in order that more 1 time may be available for manual instruction. An Auckland remit, urging the desirableness of introducing the metric system of coinage, was carried. It was resolved that in tho opinion of the Council the retention of the annual pass examination and the issue of pass certificates for standards tends to prevent freedom of classification, which is the aim of the new regulations. - At the afternoon session a Tarnnaid remit, urging the desirableness of a uniform set of text books for use in the schools of the colony was carried. A Southland remit, that the institute approve of the principle of Government attention to the physical welfare of children attending the schools, was carried. It was resolved that the superannuation fund scheme promoted by the Otago Institute be submitted to the executive with power to act. It was resolved that the next council jneeting be held at Napier, the dato being left to the executive to arrange. After other routine business and votes of thanks, the council adjourned.
