Hickson, , Holdsworth, Midlano, Niven, Richardson, Tucker, Upham, ■ and Weybourne. THE NEW ZEALAND CRICKET COUNCIL. ENGLISH AND AUSTRALIAN TEAMS TO BE INVITED TO VISIT THE COLONY.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— • ASSOCIATION.] Christchtjrch, Saturday. At , a meeting of. the New ..'Zeal and Cricket Council to-night the: question of the possibility of the English team visiting New Zealand was discussed. Major Wardill wrote stating that in view of the fact that the English professionals must arrive in England on May 1. in order to fulfil county engagements, and that the presence of the amateur county captains, six of whom are ino'-- "cd in the English team now in Australia, indispensable at the beginning of the reason, it was impossible for; the English team to visit New Zealand this summer. The Major. suggested that the only chance of obtaining a visit from an English team would bo by the Council writing for a team of English amateurs to visit New Zealand, as they would not bo restricted to time. . A great factor (Major Wardill continued) against New Zealand obtaining an-English team,; such as the present one, was the objection of the players, who are bad sailors, to making two sea trips. In the ensuing discussion opinions were expressed as to the desirability of taking action on Major Wardill's suggestion, and it was finally decided to write to the various associations affiliated to 7 the Council ■ asking whether they would support the proposal to guarantee £50 per match, or the net proceeds, in the event of the Council arranging with Lord Hawke, or some other prominent amateur, for a , series of matches with English amateurs. ; With reference to the match against Australia, it was decided that the Australian team visiting England next season should •■'■ be :" invited to play' matches in New Zealand on their return from England, the secretary, Mr.F. C. Raphael, being instructed to, arrange terms. It Was decided to play the inter-island match in Wellington on. February 28, March 1 and 3. Mr. Baker, of Dimedin, will • select the South Island team. .'.•'lncluding byes to Mount Eden teams. ! The final "round for the pennant contests is fixed for Saturday, January 11, and will be full of interest, on account of the positions I held by the Mount Eden, Auckland, Devonj port, and Newmarket Clubs. Should Mount j Eden score a win against Remuera, they are safe to secure the coveted pennant. If, however, Mount Eden ; is. defeated,* then either Auckland or Newmarket, who; meet in the.final, must tie with Mount Eden. Anothei contingency to add to the interest is the match, Devonport v. Ponsonby, as should Devonport win by play or because of Ponsonbj' adhering to its resolution to tako no further part in the contest, then: ; the :'■ transmarine club will have a further say in the matter. The position, - therefore, is extremely interesting, as if Mount Eden is defeated by Remuera, Mount Eden, Devonport, and Auckland or Newmarket will probably have to fight out a finish. ■
