TEACHERS SALARIES AND ALLOWANCES.

[BY telegraph.—press association.] ' Timabtt, Saturday. The Board of Education held a special meeting to-day to consider the various changes necessitated by the new scale of salaries and allowances. It appears that the amount allowed for general expenses of office, inspection, and committees' allowances are about the same as hitherto expended under these heads. The Board has been more liberal in the matter of house allowance to teachers of small schools than the new scale allows. A long time was spent in distributing the special funds aTTTOng teachers of district high schools. The Board resolved to restore to the salaries of the chief inspector, £35; and secretary, £25 ; being the amounts reduced some years ago, when teachers' salaries were cut down, and the assistant inspector's salary was raised by £75. • Telegrams were received from the Department that salaries next year will be based upon average for the yearCended September last. Questions regarding sewing mistresses and the conveyance of children to schools, still remain to be settled by the Department. The Government will be asked to pay exchange on salaries cheques sent to outlying branches, which now cost about £15 a year. A special meeting .will be held next month to settle the scale of allowances to school committees for incidental expenses.
