"KING EDWARD'S CLEVER JOCKEY, DANNY MAHER.

TO RECEIVE THE HIGHEST SALARY EVER PAID TO A JOCKEY.

The news that Danny Mahcr, the American jockey, will ride the horses owned by King Edward VII. of England next season at a salary said to be 25,000 dollars x; the highest retaining fee ever paid a rider on either side of the Atlantic, was no surprise to well-informed turfmen in America. Maher has always been popular on the English turf, and is quite a favourite with the Duke of Devonshire, in whose name the King races his horses while he is in mourning. Maher is nineteen years old. He is of slight physique, but rather tall for a jockey. Like the great English rider, the late Fred Archer, he. has long limbs. His normal weight is 120 pounds, but by a course of training, such as sweating, through the medium of Turkish baths, running and walking in heavy flannels, he can ride at J I pounds.

The late W. H. Clark engaged him in 1399 for two years. Maher rode Mr. Clark's Banastar that year, but when the horse was subsequently left at the post in the Suburban Handicap the irate owner refused to use him any longer. In addition, Mr. Clark refused him to ride for anyone else. Maher only, secured Mr. Clark's permission to , ride again by handing back his contract. He went to England as jockey for the late Pierre Loi\illard nearly three years ago. He was successful and popular from the first. He rides in the American fashion, and sits crouched liigh on the horse's withers. He has good hands, and can finish well, but prefers to ride in front of his field.
