UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Auckland University College Council was held at the University Buildings yesterday afternoon. Sir G. M. O'Rarke occupying the chair. There were also present: The Mayor (NT A. Ividd), the Hon. J. A. Tole, the Rev. .1. 11. Simmends, Dr. McDowell, and Mr. T. U. Wells.

The committee which was set up to consider several subjects reported that after full discussion they unanimously adopted the following resolutions: —1. "That it is exceedingly desirable that suitable teachers should be secured for the college, to give instruction in those subjects in the curriculum now taught by any members of the staff." 2. " That a system of licensing outside teachers is one that does not commend itself to your committee." 3. " That the chairman lie requested at such a time and in such a manner as he shall consider most expedient to again direct, the attention of the Government to the urgent need that exists for a substantial addition to thft statutory grant, so that the college may adequately discharge* its duty to university education in this district." 4. " That the Ctouncil be requested to endeavour to secure a teacher of modern languages for the session 1902, if the college funds permit, your committee believing that if funds are available for only one leccureship next year (exclusive of music) preference should be given to t;lie subject of modern languages." A committee, consisting of the Hon. J. A. Tole, tbie Rev. .1. 11. Simmonds, and Dr. McDowell, was appointed to consider Dr. Thomas' report on the question of the university musical examinations. It was resolved that the Sir George Grey scholarship, valued at £50, for one yoar, should be offered at the end of session 1902.
