WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION. IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT REPORTED. Reports have been in circulation for a day or two about important developments iu the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Company's mine, and yesterday a leading Auckland business firm received a telegram from their Waihi representative stating that gold was showing freely, and that there were reports abroad to the effect that the discovery was a "second Caledonian." Of course this rumour requires confirmation, and further news will be awaited with interest.

Our Waihi correspondent telegraphed last night to the effect that the report sent the previous day regarding the lode in the west end was verified by splendid assay results again obtained yesterday morning. Details are not available. The development of this lode at the 500 ft level is steadily progressing. The water is somewhat troublesome, but the management anticipate being able to keep it under, and are hopeful of results as development proceeds. HAURAKI No. 2 G.M. CO. In the Hauraki No. 2 Gold Mining Company's mine the lea'der is from 3in to 4in wide, of nice-looking quartz, well mineralised. The blue sandstone country is traversed by small quartz veins. Both the leader and the country show an improvement. NEW ALPHA G.M. CO. A congenial class of country is being penetrated in the New Alpha Gold Mining Company's mine at Waitekauri, in the drive oil the reef at No. 4 level. The lode is a strong body of ore 3ft wide, of clean stone. Tests of the ore at various points have given prospects of free gold. The drive is now in 146 ft, leaving 40ft to reach the chute of gold cut in the upper level. MARATOTO G.M. CO. In the Maratoto Gold Mining Company's mine the contractors started to drive the new crosscut on the 11th inst. with five men, and on Saturday last had driven 6ft, making in all 271 ft 6in. Yesterday they would start with tho full complement of six men. MONOWAI G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" (TORRES P -V DF. NT. ] Tiiamk.s, Tuesday. Particulars as to the result of the treatment of this company's September month's accumulation of concentrates at tho Dapto Smelting Works are just to hand, and show that the net weight of the parcel was 41j tens. The treatment resulted in a cash return to the company of £550 12s Bd, the quantity of raw ore treated for this return was 301 tons. During the September month the company treated at its cyanide plant 217 tons of tailings (from which the concentrates had previously been extracted) for a return of bullion valued at £104 12s, which brings tho month's total return to £455 4s Bd. VICTORY CLAIM. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] Thames. Tuesday. In November last the owner (Mr. .James Miller) of the Victory claim (Waiomo) forwarded to the Dapto Smelting Works in New South Wales a parcel of three tons of crude ore. Tho result of the treatment is now to hand, and shows that after making al! deductions for smelting charges, etc., the parcel yielded a total sum of £7 Is 4d, which represents a net yield oi about £2 4s per ton. The reef from which the above-mentioned parcel of ore was broken is stated to be from 6ft to Bft in width, and preparations are in progress for conducting systematic operations on the same, with the view of making regular shipments of ore to Dapto. WAIHI EXTENDED G.M. CO. [l!Y TEI.EGF.ArH. —OWN" COB.RF.SPOXDKXT.] Waihi. Tuesday. Progress in the Waihi Extended Gold Mining Company's shaft from the 300 ft level is proceeding steadily. Pumping in the Grand Junction shaft at the 50C'ft level and in the Waihi Company's No. 7 level will have a direct bearing on the future development of the Waihi Extended mine. I understand it is the manager's opinion that sinking will, in consequence, be greatly facilitated. The present depth (377 ft) reached indicates that, water is being drained by pumping in tho low levels of tho companies mentioned, and the extension of a further 100 ft in the shaft might be undertaken without difficulty, ft is the ceneral opinion of mining people here that 4OOffc will not be low enough and that the shaft should be continued to the 500 ft level before opening nut. This opinion, I understand, is shared by the mine manager. In the meantime the country in the shaft at present is composed of hard sandstone. THAMES WARDEN'S COURT.
