Whangarei RIFLES. This company went under canvas for their week's instruction on November 21. There was a good muster in camp. Sergeant-Major Cheator, staff drill-instructor, Was in charge, and has put the men through a very thorough eoursb of instruction morning and evening of each day. In the evening tile men amusea themselves with the boxing gloves in a large marquee, and frith a shooting gallery, which was erected for those who preferred a quieter amusement. On Tuesday Captain Rem, adjutant Auckland staff, visited the camp to inspect the camp, and remained in Whangarei until Thursday. On Wednesday the company was marched to Kensington Park, where they were engaged in a sham-fight, and in the evening the Wliangarei Garrison Baud. tinder _ Bandmaster C. Christie, played various selections. The public were invited, and seemed to enjoy themselves until after ten o clock. Captain Steadman has had fine, weather for his camp, which has gone off in a very pleasant manner. They break camp on November 29. I understand that they have got their class and volley firing done, so that the company has earned its capitation for the present volunteer vear. The cooking arrangements were very" good, under the management o. Messrs. Swanbiirg and Dent. , The volunteers all enjbved themselves, ami the camp has done much good to the company, not only in drill, but also in binding the members together. There can be 110 doubt that the effect of the drill is noticeable, on the members of the company. Sergeant-Major Cheator, although strict during instructions, has won the regard of all the men.—[Own Correspondent.]
MARS DEN MOUNTED RIFLES. This corps goes into camp to-day (November 30) out at Maungakaramea, where there is a verv good ground for drill purposes. The ground is in large paddocks, and flat. The tents and other camp equipments arrived on Thursday morning by the p.s. Terranora, and were sent out to the camp ground under escort. I am informed that Sergeant-Major Rodgers. staff mounted drill-instructor, is to attend the camp. It is, to be hoped that Captain Clark-Walker will have better weather for the camp than he had last year. The officers and men are very much disappointed at not having Captain Reid as instructor during the camp, as I am informed that this officer is a very great favourite with the company. There is to be a sham-fight out at the camp during the week. Messrs. Swanburg and Dent have undertaken the cooking for the camp. Lieutenant-Colonel Davies, C.8., officer in charge of the district, is to inspect the company on Thursday, December s. [Own Correspondent.]
