TRADE WITH SOUTH AFRICA.
STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. [IIT AMI. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.? , Ditnemn, Saturday. A deputation from the mercantile community waited on the Premier this morning, and urged the taking of steps to establish direct steam communication with South Africa. Mr. Seddon replied that the Government had taken authority to spend £30,000, and would leave no stone unturned to make the service a satisfactory one. But for the steam companies having taken the matter in hand, and an attempt to bluff the Government, the hitter would have had the service in operation six or eight months ago. He indicated that the steamers to fcr employed would be of the tramp class. Quick communication was not so much to be desired as regular distribution and cheap freights.
