AQUATICS.
NORTH SHORE YACHT CLUB. Inn tir>t of the season's races in connection, with the North Shore Yacht Club were sailed on Saturday afternoon, and proved very successful. Owing to the big-gnu firing 1 11,111 the tort at the North Head, the courses for the races had to be altered. The weather v. as splendid, with a real yachting breexe, and some of the yachts made verv last time. Mr. C. Bailey, jun., acted n.s barter and judge, assisted by Mr. ('. Murdoch, jun.. and both carried out their duties carefully. Tim races v. ere started promptly, there were ihi disputes over the results, and the starter a''*! his assistant are to be congratulated upon the result of their endeavours. The 26-rater Speedwell again showed a high rate of speed, passing all the boats which had started in the previous race, some of whom were away 17m. ahead of her, and winning her race in good time from Matua. Speedwell is putting up a very good record since sue started sailing, as out. of eight starts she has won six. being second and third in Ihe other contests The following are the details: —
Yachts not exceeding 25ft overall, or 20ft walei'line. l int ties ami handicaps: Kotarc, scratch: Kewi. 5m.: Moa, 6m.; J earns, 10m.: Shelia. 10m.: Colleen, 14. Course: From starting line off Calliope Dock Wharf, round first buoy round North Head, keeping outside Satulspit buoy: thence round markboat. in Hobson's .May: thence round hulk Occident off Queen-street Wharf; thence inside Calliope Dock buoy to Martini, line, once round. Colleen, the limit boat, was got away at a quarter-past I,wo o'clock, the others being got away promptly as the times elapsed. Colleen was never caught., although Shelia, itewi, and Koiare. came up a bit on her on the run round. The finish was: Colleen, 3h. 55m.; Khelia, 3h. 56n-.. 305.: I'ewi, 3h. 57m. ; Kotare, 3h. 58m. Moa did not. finish.
Yachts not exceeding 20fi overall. Entries and handicaps: Clarice, scratch; Seahorse, scratch; Boomerang, 2m.; Pan a, 10m. Course, same as last, race. Paua, the lirv:ife Iwat, was got away at twenty-five minutes to three, followed by the others at the appointed time, Paua was soon overtaken by the others; Boomerang assuming; the lead, which she maintained throughout. A good race took place ./etween Clarice and Seahorse, the scratch boats, for second place, only a minute separating them at the finish. The result was: Boomerang, 4h. 3m.; Clarice, 4h. 7m.; Seahorse, 4li. Bm.; I'aua, 4h. 11m. 30s.
Yachts not exceeding 25ft 1.w.1. Entrle3 and handicaps : Tangaroa, scratch; Isafrael, 9m.; Ofa, 9m. ; Irish Lily. 9m. ; Mavis, 9m. ; Uira, Bm. Ehoa, 10m. The limit boat was got off at ten minutes 1o three, all getting away on time excepting Uira, which was lato in coming up to the starting line. The course was tho same as last race, twice round. Ehoa maintained the lead until pass, ing the dock wharf the first time, although tho other competitors came up on her a lot. Passing the wharf Ofa had got on even terms with Ehoa, the times as they passed being: Ehoa, 4h. 15m.; Ofa, 4h. 15m.; Uira, 4h. 15m. 305.; Irish Lily, 4h. 17m.; Mavis, 4h. 17m. 2.55; Tangaroa, 4h. 18m. 13s. On the second round Tangaroa shortened the gap between her and Ofa, and Uiva dropped out of the race. The finish was: Of;-', sh. 30m. 305.; Tangaroa, sh. 34m.; Irish Lily, sh. 35m. 455.; Mavis, sh. 35m. 10«.; Ehoa, sh. 38m. 255.
Yachts, 26ft, linear rating and under. Entries: Speedwell, Matua, Bona, and Alma. The latter did not start. Course, same as last race. The boats were sent away at fi"o minutes past three. Speedwell and Bona crossed the line almost together, closely followed by Matua. Speedwell soon got away from Bona., as did also Matua, and passing the Dock Wharf on the first time round the times wore: Speedwell, 4h. 20m.; Matua, 4h. 235. 305.; Bona, 4h. 27m. On the second round Speedwell still further increased her lead, and rounding the Occident had a lead of fully 4m. Bona dropped out. After rounding the Occident Speedwell made a fine race of it, gradually drawing away from Matua, the finish, being: Speedwell, sh. 32m. 30s: Matua, 51). 37in. 255.
MANUKAU YACHT CLUB.
The members of the Manukau Yacht Club held their first race of the season on Saturday, under most favourable circumstances. The course was the same as last year, via. : — Start between coal and railway wharves, sail rovnd sixth buoy and dolphin off end of Railway Wharf, again round sixth buoy and finish south side of Railway Wharf between Mangcre dolphin and wharf. The following were the entries and handicaps:—Anahera, scratch; Maka Mailc, 3m.; Moa, 6m.; Sarah, 6m.; Fishing Scow, 6ir..: Belle, 6m.; Tui, 10m.; Mascotte, 33m.; Pretoria, 13m.; Mi'/.pah, 15m.; St. Anns, 20m.; Ladysmith, 23m.; Endeavour, 23m.; Industry, 23m.; Molly Swash, 23m.; Iris, 24m.: Fedora, 27m.; Myrtle. 29m.: Crusoe, 30m.; Daisy, 34m.: Ivsma, 35m.; Tui, 40m. hero was a good breeze blowing from the southwest, which proved about equally favourable for all the yachts, there being only 15m. between the first and last boats at the finish. Mr. A. Bagley's Ladysmith had the honour oS winning the first race of the season, with Myrtle second and Industry third.
