PAVING OF QUEEN-STREET.
TENDERS FOP the work. The tenders for the work of paving Qteenstreet were opened at last night's melting of the City Council. Only thro© teiders were received, two for wood paving and one ior asphalt, viz.:Newsom. and Cdsoa, • wood blocks, £27,725 16s; John McLeat and Sons, £28,227; Neuchatel Asphalt Company, £27,492. Messrs. McLean and Sons qualified theii tender by the condition that they should be allowed an extension of nine, as, in order that the wood should be sufficiently seasoned, it would take Irom n/ne to i 12 months to complete the work. Th« time allowed in the specifications is May 14 next. Messrs. Newson and Colson qualified their tender by a condition that in the e?ent o. the Australian Commonwealth putting an export duty on hardwood after the date oi the tender the Council should make an allowance, and if any duty is taken off the contractors to make an allowance to the Council. Mr. R. R. Hunt wrote that ho had been professionally advised that he couki not get quarry plant and plane fo. the tarmacadam in time to complete the work in the time specified, and there had been such determined opposition to granite blocks that he did not tender. If further time was allowed he would tender for tar-macadam with chipped Coromandel granite. The Neuehs.tel Asphalt Company attached a scheme for maintenance of the street for 20 years, the first five years free and the next 15 years at 9d per square yard of rcadway, or a. total for the 20 years of £13.181. If the Council decided to effect repairs at their own cost the company would keep plant and material in the town and repair at 14 s per square yard. The tenders svero referred to the Streets CommitteeMr. TT. Ferguson, secretary of the Wellington Harbour Board, wrote that the Board could not, on account of pressure of work, place the sendees of its engineer fit the disposal of the Auckland City Council to advise on the most suitable material for streetpaving. On the motion of the Mayor it was agreed that the letter be received with regret at Mr. Ferguson's inability to come to Auckland.
