STRANDING OF THE ACAMAS. The Inquiry into the stranding on Spillsby Island, Spencer Gulf, of the ship Acamas has closed. The Marine Board found that the accident was primarily due to the master assuming the standard compass to be correct, ■when, as a matter of fact, it had 17 degrees easterly deviation on the south-west course. The Board blamed the master (Captain Nelson) for not having taken steps to ascertain the errors of the compasses and having them recorded in the deviation book; for having gone to sleep for two hours between 2.30 and 4.30 on the morning of the accident without leaving instructions to his officers; and for not keeping his responsible officers better acquainted with the surrounding dangers. The Board was of opinion that, had a better understanding existed between the officer on the bridge and the look-out man, the danger would probably have been reported earlier, and the stranding averted. The Board did not, however, propose to refer the case to the higher Court.
