GREY LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council was held last evening in order to deal with a notification received from the- Treasury Department that it would bo necessary to reduce the amount of a loan of £4500 asked for the drainage of the Surrey and Sussex Wards, and £250 for tho drainage of the Richmond Ward, as tho Colonial Treasurer was only empowered to lend £4000 to a borough council for drainage works. It was suggested that tho Council call a meeting of the ratepayers to obtain their sanction to the amount of £4500 for drainago of the Surrey and Sussex Wards being reduced to £4000, and to the application for £250 for drainage of the Richmond Ward being withdrawn, thereby reducing tho total amount of drainage loans by £750. The Mayor stated that during his recent visit tc Wellington he had interviewed the Department on the matter, and the loan of the roduced amount was practically arranged for and granted provisionally, but it would bo necessary to meet the ratepayers on the question. He also reported that ho had scon the Minister for Marino and others with reference to the reclamation of the intake at Cox's Crcok for the purposes of a public park, and was assured that the matter would receive attention. The Mayor also detailed tho efforts made by himself in endeavouring to secure the site belonging to tho Assets Board for a park for Surrey Hills. He said that he had interviewed Mr. Seddon, as chairman of the Assets Board, in the matter, and had been told that the Board wanted £6000 for it. Ho added that in February, 1899, the Council had been offered tho land for tho sum of £4000. He thought that it would be cheaper to resume possession of tho land under the Public Works Act, in accordance with the powers vested in them. After discussion, it v.as resolved to call a meeting of the ratepayers on the loan question, the date to bo fixed by the town clerkOn the motion of 'he Mayor, seconded by Mr. MoMaster, it was resolved, " That formal application be made to the Hon. the Minister for Lands to have the intake at Cox's Creek gazetted is a portion of the borough for public recreation purposes." It was also resolved, ->n the motion of Mr. Farroll, seconds:! by Mr. Foster, "That tho Council approve of an offer being made to the Assets Board for die park site, subject to the approval of the latepayers, the amount to lx' offered to be decided at the next meetins of tho Council." The question of what position the delegates appointed by the Council to represent them at the conference of public bodies re the proposed extension of the city boundaries should take up was introduced, but was dropped after a desultory conversation, the general expression of opinion beiDg against the amalgamation scheme.
