THE FIRE AT CLEVEDON.
The following particulars are to hand in reference to the residence of Mrs. D. Crawford, which was burned to the ground on Thursday night, August 29. Mrs. Crawford retired to bed earlier than usual, not feeling very well. Some, time afterward, her brother, aged 14, returned home from Hunua, and went to the pantry, which was under the stairs, to get some, supper, after which he went'to bed. Mrs. Crawford was awakened, presumably about, midnight, by hearing a crash, and on rushing to the kitchen found it in flames. She immediately ran back to the bedroom to get the children, and had it not been for her prompt action and presence of mind there are grave doubts if any of them would have been saved. Every effort was afterwards made to get some of the furniture out, but with the exception of the piano and a few articles, the former very much knocked about, nothing was saved. The building was a substantial two-storeyed residence of nine rooms, and was insured for £200 in the Sun office. The same company had £25 on the furniture and £25 on the piano. Mrs. Crawford is a big loser, jus the dwelling was valued at £400, and the furniture, etc.. at over £150.—[YVairoa South Correspondent.]
