The old house, purchased by Cardinal Manning in 1871, has been sold, and •will be at once converted into flats. The new residence has been erected at a cost "- of about £40,000, and, in addition to a handsome suite of reception rooms and a spacious private chapel, has a large hall attached, which will be used for public meetings,■: assemblies, and conferences. You may be aware that he is " drawing" you, but, like the bird in the snake fable, you feel powerless to resist. And all the time Sir William gives nothing in return. "A hard man to fathom," he was called in India, and. in truth, his own real opinion on any point, social or professional, is seldom discovered. Sir William is a splendid organiser, , an unceasing vovker, devoted to his ' profession ; but sport of any kind has little "attraction for him. • The diamond jubilee of the foundation of St. Paul's.. Church will be celebrated by a 'social gathering in the schoolroom on Monday evening next. There will be addresses, ''▼oca! and. instrumental music, and refresh.ments. ... ■'
