WOMAN TAKES TWO BURGLARS.
DRIVES THEM HALF A MILE. New; York, .May 23.—At the muzzle of a revolver Mi's. Ella Karcher, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, held up two supposed burglars at four o'clock yesterday morning in her residence, and marched them half a mile to Senator John Kean's house, from which place they were turned over to the Elizabeth police. Mrs. Karcher, who is about forty years old, lives at the intersection of Morris and North Avenues, Elizabeth. She was alons in the place, awaiting her husband's arrival, when she heard a noise. Jumping out of bed, she grasped a revolver and ran downstairs. There she encountered a young man who gave his name afterwards as Patrick Downing, 21 years old. She covered him with tho revolver and ordered him to throw up his hands. He quickly complied, and at that moment Mrs. Karchcr espied another man hiding behind a door, She ordered him to step out and also hold up his hands if he did not want to bo shot. Ho likewise did as commanded.
Mrs. Karcher then told both intruders to fall in line and walk ahead of her to Senator Kean's, at the same time keeping her weapon levelled at them. When the", Senator's place was reached Mrs. Karcher rang the bell with, one hand, while covering her captives at the same time with her revolver. The butler-responded, and she directed him to telephone to police headquarters, and officers soon arrived and took the men into custody. The second man gave his name as Lawrence Downing, 25 years old. The men are brothers, And said they had been working on a farm in Union township. They effected an entrance, it is believed, by lorcing a door leading into the kitchen.
