"LAN MACLAREN'S" WARNING.
LITERARY CHURCHMEN AND THE DANGER OF INTELLECTUAL UNREST.
" lan* M.H'i.auks'." better known in the religious world as the Rev. Dr. John Watson, of Sefton Park Church, Liverpool, was present at a late meeting of the Synod of the Prsbyterian Church of England, at- Regent Square Church, London.
In moving the adoption of the report of the Theological College, at- Cambridge, the well-known novelist said he could conceive nothing more serious to any Church than to hive in the ministry men more devoted to letters than to religion, more skilful in criticising Scripture than in preaching the Gospel of Christ.
" The churches of ministers,' he said, " whose preaching leaves doubt in the minds of their hearers whether Christ rose from the dead or, indeed, ever lived at all, had far better be closed."
To-day's great danger was the increase of negative thought and negative teaching, and its great need was strung and convincing aliirmation of the great Christian virtues, lest in the intellectual unrest of the time the Roman Catholic Church might prove the residuary legatee.
