WHITE STAR CELTIC ABOUT TO BE
LAUNCHED.
TnE biggest, but not quite the longest nor the fastest, ship ever afloat was launched at Harland and Wolff's works at Belfast lately—the White Star Celtic.
Here is a comparison of the Celtic with' some of the other great boats Great Eastern, length overall, 691 ft; breadth, 82 Bft • depth 48.2 ft. gross tons, 18.915; Campania' length overall 620 ft, breadth 65ft. depth 43ft, gross tons, 12,950; Kaiser Wilhelw der Crosse, length overall, 626.7 ft, breadth, 66ft, depth, 39ft, gross tons, 14,349; Oceanic, length overall, 705.6 ft, breauth, 69ft, depth, 49ft, gross ton, 17,274; Dentschland, length overall, 660.9 ft. breauUi. 68ft. depth. 49ft, gross tons, 17,274; DeutCeltic, length overall, 700 ft, breadth, 75t't, depth, 49ft, gross tons. 20.880. The Celtic, it will be seen, is a few feet shorter than her sister, the Oceanic, but she gains m beam and in tonnage. It is believed she will be the most comfortable boat afloat, and the Oceanic has confirmed the White .Star's belief that some people prefer going with greater comfort and less speed. The Celtic will displace 36,700 tons ot water, as against- the 14.000 tons ol a modern battleship. She is a nine-decker: lower orlop, orlop, lower, middle, upper, bridge, upper bridge, boat, and sun decks. Her shell-plates number 1392, average 30ft by sft in surface and an inch in thickness, and some of them weigh four tons. Electric drills and hydraulic rivettins machines were used in the construction. The engines will be Harland and Wolffs own quadruple-expansion type the Celtic will carry 347 saloon. 160 second class, and a large number of third-class passengers.
