Green (says an Adelaide ■ paper) sadly lacks accommodation such as that afforded by fho commodious olubrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, and Bsllarat. As a preliminary st*p i-o remedying the deficiency, i epresenta.tives of the club waited on the Premier a few weeks ago, and asked that a- longer and more secure lease of the ground might be given, so that the members should be justified in incurring substantial expenditure. The Government readily realised that the erection of an ornamental clubhouse and the laying of additional rinks would improve the aspect of that portion of the Govern- ' ment Domain, and Mr. Holder has promised that, on condition that £400 is expended, the club shall be given a lease for 21 years, and (he ground dedicated for the purpose of bowls. On April 27 the M.C.C. rinks wove fairly well attended (says the Melbourne Leader), the occasion being the presentation of the pennant and. shield to the M.C.C. Mr. W. Bald, the senior vice-pre-sident of the Victoria Bowling Association, officiated. This is the second lime M.C.C have wen the pennant. They previously carried off the honours in 1896-97. This season they played nine matches, and only lost one, viz., agai&it Richmond Union, on the M.C.C. Green. Messrs. G. B. Gordon. A. Li'lie, J. Spiers, and C. J. Hayward have captained tho M.C.C. rinks right through the season, and the teams have been practically unchanged during the past two seasons. Mr. W. Bald, vice-president of the V.8.A., made the presentation of the pennant and shield. The shield is a handsome ! one, of colonial design, and the name,-, of the players who formed (he premier team are engraved thereon. THE AUSTRALIAN BOWLING TEAM. A Victorian bowler, now in West Australia, writes:—"The Australia arrived at ten o'clock alongside the Frcmantlo pier, and the bowlers were met by the president of th« association (Mr. Mcllenry Clark), tho treasurer of the Fremantle Club (Mr. L. I Alexander), and Mr. Smythe (the secretary). After being allowed a look round the town i on. foot, the Victoria-Australians were driven i | ik cabs to the bowline green, formally re- | ceived, and a. scratch Fremantle team then > I played a friendly name with the visitors. ! | Mr. L. Waxman, of Armadale, playing third ) I for Mr. ('. Wood. Mr. McHenry Clark, wh< I skippered against Mr. C. Wood, has never ■ ! previously occupied that position, and is not I in the pennant team. The West Australians— s ' Bales, Cosh. Taylor, Williams, Benbow, I Miller, Smythe. Weir, and company—are i : thorough exponents of the game. After this ; I friendly roll up luncheon was 'discussed' at '' j the Park Hotel, and the chair occupied by I Air. Holmes, M.L.A. (Hio, by the way, is a 1 ; bowler, and who will be in Melbourne for j tho opening of the Federal Parliament), on I whose right, was Mr. Wood, and on his left | Mr. Davie.9, Mayor of Fremantle. Mr. i I Wood, in responding to the toast of his ; health, and that of the 'boys' under his care, j expressed his deep sense of gratitude at the j heartiness of the welcome of 'he Fremantle ; men, and surprise at tho excellence of their I green. Tie concluded by expressing the | hope that the suggestion thrown out by Mr. Alexander (that West Australia should be included in inter-State bowling contests) I would be adopted on his return from the Old I Country. The team had another roll up after ! lunch, and wore then driven back to the boat I in the afternoon, after having a really delightI ful 'break' en voyage." Jack.
