THE MAORIS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Friday. Though the census returns show a decrease in the number of Maoris in the South Island, the Native Minister believes that many halfcastes, who were included as Maoris in the census five years ago, are now accounted for in the European census, and that the Maori population of the island is as large as 1895. MOVEMENT OF THE POPULATION. [BY TELFGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington*, Friday. The Registrar-General, in an official memo. relative to the European population, says: — "A characteristic of the enumeration is a noticeable aggregation in the centres and dairy-farming districts. The considerable degree of the dislocation of population has given rise to some unfavourable surmises by the press, but it will be observed that the estimate is closely realised. The movement from the South Island to the North still continues."
