« GRAFTON WARD. The census returns for Grafton Ward were ! completed yesterday by Mr. King, chief ' enumerator, showing a considerable increase as compared with the figures for 1896. The corrected census returns show that the population of Ohinemuri is 9975, the Kuriuigahn,'ce and Waikino ridng being augmented by 50, and Paeroa by 10. The population of the Tour ridings is therefore : — Wiiihi, 1271 : Karajigahake and Waikino, 2259; Paeroa, 21:2'; Waitekauri, 1207 ; Waitoa, 116 : total. 9975. ASH BURTON". [BY TELEGRAPH. All the Maori census returns, with the 1 exception of that for the Thames district, 1 have now reached the Registrar-General, i They show that the Maori population of the colony, apart from the Thames district, is | about 35.000. an increase of 2000, as compared with 1896. It is expected that the full returns will show that there are fully '10.000 Maoris in the colonv, or at least 1500 more than 1836.
