THE DRILL SUED SITE.

.'At a meeting of the Auckland Board of Education yesterday, correspondence was read with reference to the rc-erection of the Drill Shed on the old site, to which the Board took objection. The Minister for Education telegraphed that the legal position would be inquired into. The Reserves Commissioners wrote that they regretted they had not the power to prevent the re-erection of the Drill Hall or the old site, but they would agree to the Board taking any action they desired, provided the Commissioners were indemnified from any expense. Mr. Bagnall said the attendance at Wel-lesley-strect school had not been increasing. although there was an increase during last quarter from 639 to 731. Mr. Farrell said he had no doubt that the Defence Department would find they could not re-erect the hall on the. present site, unless the Reserves Commissioners gave them more ground. The Technical School would have to be erected close to Wellesley-street school,- 1 and irrespective of the accommodation for the playground, lie did not think it was a, good thing that the Drill Shed should be in close proximity to the school, on account of the people assembling near the Drill Hall. He moved that the matter be left over meantime. Mr, Bagnall said his opinion was that the Drill Hall should be erected in a permanent place, more in keeping with the volunteer movement than the present site Mr. Muir thought the Board should allow the Government to proceed, because at present the volunteers had no hall, and there was really plenty of playground accommodation for the school children. Mr. Blades said he would strenuously oppose r the- re-erection of the building on the old site. , If the hall was not to be reerected, the Board could fence in the whole of the ground, and make it secure. The hottl at the corner, so near the school wis very objectionable. ' : It was then agreed unanimously to defer ! consider:- of the matter.
