At the Police Court yesterday, an information against bookmakers for trespass on the New Brighton racecourse at the meeting of the Trotting Club, was beard. Thomas Hulligan was fined £5, and John Hyains £2. The case against Sydney Nettleford was adjourned. Wang.Usui, Wednesday. Detective Bishop last night arrested an elderly man named Thomas Slater (with various aliases) on a charge of fraud. Dttnedin, Wednesday. The Hon. J. G. Ward stayed at the Hon. J. McKenzie's place on his way down. He found his old colleague greatly improved in health and spirits, so much so that ho would not be surprised to see him on the warpath again. The five newly reclaimed streets on the Harbour Board's property are to be named Roberts, Buller, White, Kitchener, and French Streets. A deputation of directors of the company owning the Orepuki shale works, waited on the Hon. J. 6. Ward, to urge the advisable- . ness of the adjustment of freights for the special products of the works. The Minister expressed himself desirous of promoting j the interests of the industry in every legiti-; mate way, and promised to look into the matter with the view of giving relief sought when readjusting on his return from Mel- * bourne. The Minister left for the South in the afternoon. Wellington, Wednesday. Lister, who pleaded guilty to false pretences, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour at the Supreme Court yesterday, by Chief Justice Sir Robert Stout. /
The Chief Justice sentenced John Houghton, for the forgery of the names of clergymen and others, to 18 monks' hard labour. A native named Ngahuia Matu was com-' mitted for trial yesterday, on a charge of breaking and entering another Maori's house at Otaki. The Chief Justice to-day sentenced Henry Jeffries, who pleaded guilty to forgery, to six months' imprisonment. " Nelson, Wednesday. . Sister Mary of Calvay ; (Miss Alice fhvan) formerly of Amberley, died at the convent, Nelson, yesterday, aged' 36. Napier, Wednesday. The Mayor delivered a short valedictory address at the Council to-night, reviewing many of the principal works carried out during his Mayoralty, i.'j The Harboui Board yesterday confirmed recently-passed by-laws reducing wharfage dues, although the motion was "strongly opposed by the country section. Patka, Wednesday. Mr. Leslie Reynolds; C.E., has been retained by the Patea Harbour Board to report on the proposed improvements tc the harbour. j
