AUCKLAND RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION. The adjourned meeting of the Auckland Ratepayers' Association was held at the Alexandra-street Hall last evening, to consider the question of the candidates the association should support in the various wards at the forthcoming ' municipal elections. Mr. Caleb Wood, who presided, in referring to the Mayoralty, expressed the opinion that Mr. Arkell had acted inadvisedly in coming out in opposition to Dr. Campbell, and putting the city to considerable expense, when his prospects of success were comparatively nil. Mr. R. McCallum pointed out that while everyone recognised that Mr. Arkell had little or no chance,_ it would not be wise to overlook the question of the Mayoralty altogether. In certain of the wards there would be no election of members of Council, and_ if no steps were taken to, arouse interest in the Mayoralty, they might fail to record their votes. Others present supported this view, and on the motion of Mr. Wm. Coleman, it was agreed that the association should declare in favour of Dr. Campbell, and that all possible steps should be taken to forward that gentleman's candidature for the Mayoralty. The candidates for the various wards where contests are to be held were then discussed, and on a ballot being taken it was decided that the association should support the following: South Ward: Messrs. R. Farrell, B. Tudehope, A. Rosser. Ponsonby Ward: Messrs. John Court, C. J. Parr, Jas. Stiohbury: Grafton Ward: Messrs. Jas. Jamieson, J. Hewson, M. Casey. CAMBRIDGE.
Mr. W. F. Buckland was elected unopposed for the Mayoralty. The following were nominated for the positions of councillors Messrs. C. W. Arnold, C. Boyce, Jas. Cargo, W. T. Carr, G. E. Clark, R. Davies, W. Escott, J. Ferguson. J. Howe, F. O'Toole, J. R. S. Richardson, C. Roberts, A. A. Smith, A. Wallace, and T. Wells.— [Own Correspondent.]
