DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tin! ordinary meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was hold last evening. Present: Mr. J. C. Macky (the Mayor), and Messrs. O. Mays, R. Duder, R. Logan, jun., J. Walker, H. Baulf, E. Alison, and M. Niccol.
New Council: The report from the returning officer (Mr. J. 0. Webster) stated that Mr. Malcolm Niccol was appointed to the office of Mayor for the Borough of Devonport, unopposed, for the ensuing year. Mr. J. C. Macky, the present Mayor, congratulated Mr. Niccol and Devonport on the election. Other councillors expressed their pleasure. A list of nominated gentlemen for councillors at the election of the 24th inst. was also read. The Mayor expressed regret at not seeing Mr. Mays' name amongst them, and moved, That a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Mays for his long and valued public, services to the Borough of Devonport be recorded on the minutes." Mr. Niccol seconded, and Messrs. Alison and Duder expressed their appreciation of his services, and his good qualities. Mr. Mays explained that ho intended to have a well-earned holiday, and thanked the councillors for their kind remarks.
Correspondence : Messrs. Patorson and Co. wrote- 'drawing attention to the state of Ann-street, in front of their stables. Resolved to reply that the matter was receiving attention. Messrs. Williamson and Co. wrote on behalf of Mr. P. Oliphant, asking that portion of Burgess Road be tarred and sanded. Resolved to carry out the wosJc. Mr. H. H. Metcalfe wrote offering to'prepare plans for the drainage scheme at Stanley Point, at a cost of £30. Matter deferred for ono month. Mr. T. Nicholson tusked that portion of the footpath in Victoria Road be tarred and sanded. .The matter was referred to Mr, Walker, Messrs. Buddie, Button and
Co. wrote on behalf of the Auckland College and Grammar School Board, stating that their clients intended opening up their allotments in Buchanan-street, and asked the Council- to consent to a right-of-way to the property. Resolved that the seal be attached to the deed forwarded, and that it be handed to tho Council's solicitors. A petition was received from residents of High-street, requesting that the street bo formed and laid with scoria-ash. The matter was deferred for a month. ■
Tenders: Two tenders were received for a box culvert in Lake Road. Shoal Bay, as follows: Win. Alexander. £83 15s; Robt. McCallum, £147 and £123. The tender of Mr. Alexander was accepted, subject to certain conditions.
Finance Committee: The Finance and Legal Committee reported that the amount required for .estimated works re streets within the borough to be completed was £530 17s 6d, which did not include the value of tho blue metal in hand. The expenditure on tho balance of tho drainage lean was fixed at £1532, and tho receipts at £1400. leaving £532 to bo taken from the next year's general rates. The estimated income on the district fund account for 1901-2 was £2097, and estimated expenditure, including present overdraft, £1397. leaving an overdraft on March 31, 1902, of £1000. Bankers: On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to confirm in accordance with the new Municipal Corporations Act, the appointment of the National Bank of New Zealand as the borough bankers.
