THE COMING MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

AUCKLAND CITY. The nominations in connection with the election of the Mayor of Auckland and 15 councillors closed yesterday with Mr. ThOS. Ussher, the returning officer. For the office of Mayor there were two nominations, namely, Dr. J. L. Champbell and Mr. D. Arkell. In East and North Wards the number of candidates nominated did not exceed the required number, so that no election will be necessary. In East Ward, Messrs. P. E. Baume, Charles Grey, and Alfred Kidd have been elected unopposed, and in North Ward, Messrs. Peter Dignan, J. H. Hannan, and T. T. Masefield were similarly elected. In the other wards an election will be necessary, and the polling day has been fixed for Wednesday next. The nominations are as under —South Ward. Messrs. R. Farrell, A. E. Glover, J. T. Julian, Arthur Rosser, and R, Tudehope. Ponsonby Ward: Messrs. Joseph Becroft, John Court C. J. Parr, and James Stichbury. Grafton Ward: Messrs. Maurice Casey, H. T. Garratt, J. W. Hewson, James Jamieson. and John Patterson. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. V . JCourtney, .7. M. Shera, and A. R. Watson, waited "yesterday upon Mr. D. Arkell., to impress upon him the advisability of retiring from the contest for the Mayoralty, as they believed that they represented the voice of the community, and, in their opinion, he had no chance of being elected. The only result would be to saddle the city with useless expense. The deputation had appointed Mr. Courtney as spokesman. Mr. Courtney states that he asked Mr. Arkell to listen to him for five minutes, and also accord Messrs. Shera and Watson five minutes each. He states that before he had spoken to Mr. Arkell for three minutes that gentleman went out of the room and would not hear anything further, but simply contented himself with stating that he would go to tlte poll. Mr. Courtney says that before Mr. Arkell left the room he told that gentleman that it was the general desire of citizens that Dr. J. Logan Campbell should be Mayor. He again asked Mr. Arkell to retire with a good grace. Mr. Arkell declined to retire', and left the room.

GREY LYNN. Messrs. J. W. Shackelford and R. T. Warnock have been nominated lor the office of Mayor of Grey Lynn. The following candidates have been nominated as councillors: —Messrs. W. Brinsdcn, W. W. Dumper, A. J. Parker, J. Rosier, W. S. Smith, and W. White, Surrey Ward; Messrs. J. Farrell, R. C. Foster; R. Hall, and J. H. Muldoon, Sussex Ward; Messrs. Thos. Billing-ton, Thos. Booth, A. Donald, J. Prater, C. McMaster, and C. Morley, Richmond Ward. Three councillors are required for each ward, and polls for the election of Mayor and councillors will be held on Wednesday next, between the hours of nine a.m. and seven p.m. PARNELL. The nominations for the Parnell Borough Council do not close until Friday next at noon. NEWMARKET.

As announced yesterday the number of nominations received by the returning officer for Newmarket do not exceed the number required. No election will therefore be necessary, and the following have been, declared elected : —Mayor, Mr. J. L. Mc'Coll; councillors. Messrs. J. S. Angus, F. Bennett, J. R, Gaston, E. Davis, W. Edgerley, J. Kennedy, J. M. Laxon, A". R. fcicceombe, and A. O. Shipherd.

DEVONPORT. The following candidates have been duly nominated for the office of councillor for the Borough of Devonport, for the poll to be held oil the 24th inst. :—E. W. Alison, nominated by Messrs. J. A. Laing, M.D., and E. G. 11. Ford. H. J. Baulf, nominated by Messrs. Win. Verran and Jno. Evans. E. D. Benjamin, nominated by Messrs. C. Creagmile and J. W. Williamson. E. H. Duder, nominated by Messrs. T. J. Duder and A. J. Grattan. Jas Dunning, nominated by Messrs. T. B. Howarth and J. C. Entrican; Wm. Handley, nominated by Messrs. J. C. Macky and G. A. Gribbin. J. W. Harrison, nominated by Messrs. V. J. Lanier and G. A. Gribbin. Robert Logan, jim., nominated by Messrs. Jo?. Miller and Jno. Prater. F. E. Mason, nominated by Messrs. W. J. Beale and G. C. Best. W. J. W. Philson, nominated by Messrs. G. H. Brookes and G. A. Creeth. J. M. Syms, nominated by Messrs. W. Verran and Geo. Johnston. J. A. Walker, nominated by Messrs. 'J. M. Syms and W. P. Davies. Seven of the above candidates are retiring councillors seeking re-election, and five are fresh in the field. Considerable interest is being taken in the elections in Devonport. Mr. Malcolm Niccol has been returned unopposed to the position of Mayor of the Borough of Devonport. He was the first Mayor, and this is the sixth time since the formation of Devonport into a borough that Mr-. Niccol has held this honourable position. Since 1886 Mr. M. Niccol was Mayor 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889, and 1895; Mr. E. W. Alison, 1890, 1891, 1892, 1893. and 1894 ; and Mr. J. C. Macky, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1900, and retires 1901.

CAMBRIDGE. Oik Cambridge correspondent writes: — Mr. W. F. Buckland has been nominated for the Mayoral chair for the ensuing year, which is a, matter for congratulation, as that gentleman lias filled the position most worthily in the past. NEW PLYMOUTH. [BY TELEGRAM".PRESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth, Tuesday. There is no contest in the election of borough councillors. Messrs. Docrill and Cock contest the Mayoralty. NAPIER. [HT TELEGRAPH. —ntIMS ASSOCIATION.] Napier, Tuesday. Messrs. J. C. McVay and Samuel Carnell have been nominated for the Mayoralty. For the Council there are 25 candidates for 12 vacancies. The number includes Mr. G. 11. Swan, the retiring Mayor. WELLINGTON DISTRICT. [BY TELEGRAM. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. John W. Aitken and Thomas M. Wiliord were to-day nominated for the city Mayoralty. Twenty-four candidates were nominated for 12 seats in the City Council. The city municipal roll contains 13,660 names, as against 19,072 on the Parliamentary roll. James Re-id, George Frost, George Baylis, and Arthur Fulford were nominated for the Mayoralty of Melrose, and 18 for the Borough Council. James Henderson and F. McDonald contest the Mayoralty at Karori. Fourteen candidates were nominated for nine seats in the Council.

TIMARU. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Timaru, Tuesday. There are two ' candidates for the Mayoralty, namely, Messrs. Mcintosh and MeNab. Four of the six wards lifive returned two candidates. INVERCARGILL. [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Inveiicarqiu., Tuesday. Messrs. Horace Bastings, Chns. Longiiet, and P. G. Stone, have been nominated for the Mayoralty.
