A SHIP ON FIRE.

TOWED INTO PORT : CHALMERS. ; Port Chalmers, March 24. The four-masted barque Stratbgryfe, Captain Mcßitchie, from Sydney (March 8), for London, with a cargo of wool, which was reported off Cape Saunders on Saturday afternoon, was tendered by the Harbour Board tug Koputai, which brought her into port this afternoon. Her cargo is on lire.

Some of the stevedores working on the Stratbgryfe during Sunday night, suffered (severely from fumes.

[The Stratbgryfe. which is a steel vessel, was built by Russell and Co., of Port Glasgow, in 1390, for the Stratbgryfe Snipping Company (D. McGillinnay), of Greenock, and is of the following dimensions : Length,. 279.4 ft ; breadth, 41.9ffc ; depth, 24.4 ft ; tonnage, 2276. The vessel arrived at Sydney from Liverpool in the early part of this year, with a large general cargo, on discharge of which she proceeded to Newcastle to take in part cargo for London, returning to Sydney to complete her loading. She was cleared at the Customhouse on March 4, with the following cargo from Sydney :—5594 bales woo], 2325 bags chrome ore, 1000 sacks wheat, 5533 bags concentrates. From Newcastle : 61 ! bales wool, 749 casks tallow, 2575 bags wheat.]

At a meeting of underwriters' .representatives to consider what ster)s should be taken in connection with the cargo of the Strath - gryfe, damaged by fire and water, it was decided that the damaged wool, amounting to about 2000 bales, be sold by auction on April 4, and that the wheat should be sold on truck as it arrives in Dunedin.

YACHT ARIADNE STRANDED. Dtjnedin, March 25. A private wire has reached here stating that the yacht Ariadne,'travelling round the world, is ashore on the beach south of Waitaki River. All on board are safe. Oamaktt, March 25. The Ariadne, which came ashore two mile 3 south of the Waitaki River at eight o'clock on Saturday night, is the yacht of Mr. Kerry, of London. She is a beautifully-fitted, vessel of 230 tons, and is valued at £15,000. The owner left the vessel in Sydney, and instructed his sailing-master to proceed to Dune-din, and it wa.s in making for that port that she came ashore.

The- vessel lies under a ■ high bank of shingle, and at high-water is struck by every sea, and it is doubtful if she will be got oft". The crew of 12' are safely ashore, and the vessel at low-water lies in comparative safety. Sydney, March 26.

Mr. Kerry.: the owner of the Ariadne, states that .besides the amount held art; Lloycifs, he holds £10,000 insurance on the yacht.
