STRATFORD RAILWAY .
TURNING THE FIRST SOD.
Stratford, March 29. Perfect.■weather prevailed for the celebration of turning the first sod of the StratfordKawakawu railway. There were about 4000 people present, including a large number of visitors, who arrived by special 'rains from New Plymouth and Hawera. The whole town was gaily decorated with flags, arches, and evergreens, and to-night was brightly illuminated with numerous coloured electric lights and lanterns. Mr. Hall-Jones was driven to the site in an open landau, drawn by four grays, escorted by a detachment of Mounted Rifles, the procession following. In addressing the people on the ground the Hon. W. Jones said he expected to have the first train run through to Toko by Christmas. Mr. Hall-Jones was entertained at a banquet to-night.
The following telegram from the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. Hall-Jones), restive to the Stratford railway, was received by Auckland members on March 29 "Everything passed off splendidly to day. We had fine weather, and a great crowd was present. = Everyone is satisfied now that they have received my/ promise that the work will be put in hand immediately. I propose to have the men working on Monday next, and to have trains running on the first section to Toko (a distance of six miles) by Boxing Day this year." Large gangs of men started work on April lon the Strat-ford-Whangamomona line.
