WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Tuesday.
MINISTERIAL.
The Premier is at Greymouth attending the bedside, of a dying friend. He is expected to return to Wellington to-morrow.
GOING HOME,
The Rev. Richard Coffey is going to Europe. His parishioners have offered him a valuable presentation, but he declined to accept it lest it should be said he failed in littering the strong and the true word to his congregation. The admirers of the clergyman were equal to the occasion, and offered the tea service and sovereigns as a token of their admiration for their minister, to Mrs. Coffey. Mr. Coffey is one of the most popular clergymen in' this city. His friends describe some of his pulpit utterances as " hot coffee," and are proud of his pastoral sermons. Mr. and Mrs. Coffey will spend a good deal of their time in Ireland.
THE NEW SURVEYOR-GENERAL. A good deal of interest attaches to the appointment of a new Surveyor-General. It was thought that Mr. Jas. McKerrow, who formerly filled the office, had been appointed, but Mr. McKerrow denied that rumour. It is now said that Mi*. Mueller, of Auckland, or Mr. Marchant, of Wellington, will be offered the position. It has been also affirmed that Mr. Barron, the present secretary to the Agricultural Department, will receive the coveted preferment, but those who are intimately acquainted with the Department consider that this is not likely.
FISH. A shoal of kahawai visited the harbour yesterday, and caused a good deal of excitement among the seagulls. NATIVE SANITATION. Mr. Pomare, the native doctor, is prosecuting his mission among the natives of the East Coast. He has had considerable success among the Maoris. He found a good deal of sickness among them, which he attributed to bad weather. He has succceeded in impressing upon them the importance of keeping their settlements in a sanitary condition.
MIDLAND RAILWAY COMMISSION.
The Commission will proceed to take the evidence of witnesses residing in Wellington, to-morrow.
